“The Supreme Court ruled today that state officials can be sued and found personally liable for damages for violating an individual’s civil rights.”

“…the Federal law at issue in the case, the Civil Rights Act of 1871, explicitly extended liability to “every person who, under color of any statute, ordinance, regulation, custom, or usage, of any State” violates someone’s civil rights. Justice O’Connor said this law made it clear that state officials’ liability flowed from the exercise of their official authority.”
