“A group of 200 French lawyers wrote an open letter to French President Emmanuel Macron, protesting the president’s decision to place the country into a second nationwide lockdown, suggesting that the policy protects only biological life while neglecting mental, physical, and social well-being.
“We agree with the President’s statement that nothing is ‘more important than human life,’” the letter states. “But a national lockdown is an approach reduced to the biology of life alone, forgetting that health is also, according to the WHO definition, ‘a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’. Protecting life therefore implies taking into account all its aspects, which are as much social, cultural, spiritual, political and economic as they are health-related.”
The letter, which was first published in France on Nov. 4 in Le Journal du Dimanche, criticizes Macron’s approach to the virus for being willing to sacrifice nearly everything that comprises life in order to avoid infection.
“We are deeply concerned about the future of this zero-risk society, which would be ready to stop living so as not to die. Ready to sacrifice practically everything – its normal living conditions, social relations, work, and even friendships, affections and political and religious convictions – because of the threat of infection.”
Macron’s France is not the only European country that has reinstituted lockdowns. According to Macron, factories and public schools will continue to function, with heightened sanitary protocols, but the French president is ordering a system of broad remote working, including for higher education.
The group of lawyers point to what they describe as the “twisting [of] the law” to suit a “technical-scientific injunction of doctors and the Scientific Council, who impose their vision to the detriment of a more global political vision which must balance different interests.”
The lawyers finished the letter by charging the government with their fundamental duties to protect the lives of the French people in their entirety by allowing them to live their lives, and by issuing a call to the “elites” on all sides to oppose the lockdown measures.”
